Twisted Donuts or "Shakoy"

My very first Twisted Donuts or "Shakoy" -a very popular snack in the Philippines, paired with coffee or hot chocolate during breaks or merienda. I am not sure why we call it Shakoy but all I know is - it is very delicious.



milk, sugar, dry yeast mixture:
   1 tbsp sugar dissolved in
   150ml warm milk
   1 pack dry yeast

for the flour-water mixture:
   25g flour dissolve in
   100 ml water

350g flour
3 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 egg
4 tbsp melted butter
2 tbsp sour cream (optional)

1.  First dissolve the 25g flour in 100 ml water in a pan and cook it in low heat until it turns into a pudding like mixture (see video). Set aside.

2. Mix the sugar and warm milk well and then add the dry yeast. Mix them again and let it rise for about 5 - 10 minutes.

3. In a bread machine, add the 350g flour, sugar, salt, egg, butter and sour cream. Add the rest of the ingredients. 

4. When you don't have any bread machine, put all ingredients together in basin or container and mix them thoroughly. Knead it to form a dough for about 10 minutes. Cover and put the dough in a warm place. Let it rise for about one hour.

5.  After an hour the dough should have doubled its size. Knead them again for about 3 - 5 minutes then cut them into desired sizes. Roll the dough into a long stick and twist them as shown in the video. Let it rest for a while.

6. Fry them in a pot until golden brown. There should be enough oil in it.

7. Roll the shakoy in sugar and serve while it is warm.
